----------------------------      HISTORY IN THE MAKING -----------------------------------

DEC 2010:  MY old Sheriff died this month, 70 yrs old, 34 year as the Sheriff.  Heart Attack

FOR JAN 2011: THE CONTRACT:

Two more friends died this past summer of natural causes/diseases. They were part of the Sheriff Office patrol. Their passing reminded me of this true story involving a group of people (Motorcycle Gang), a rancher, and two young new hire deputies on patrol.

The 2 deputies pulled over a car whose driver was acting suspicious. The end result: Contract to kill the 2 deputies, and the suspect was murdered.
It was the winter months and the air was crisp and cold. The 2 man unit was patrolling a rural area about 11 at night when they saw a vehicle pulled over on the side of the road. The deputies turned and pulled behind the car, which promptly pulled away and re-entered the traffic lane. The car's driver looked very nervous, and began to accelerate quickly. The deputies followed behind him until his speed became an issue. Continuing to accelerate 15 past the posted speed limit, the officers activated the overhead rotating lights. The vehicle turned into a rancher’s driveway, and then stopped in their front yard. The driver exited the car and opened the hood of the car. He began to work on the car. The deputies called the stop to the dispatcher and approached the driver. The driver refused to show any ID and was evasive and agitated, ordering the deputies to leave his property. Without his ID we could not verify who he was, so the standoff began. He then said he didn’t have his wallet with him, and began to run to the front porch. Both deputies ordered him to stop, but he refused. As the deputies entered the front porch, the man swung at the first deputy and missed. Both deputies then tacked the man and crashed through the screen door and the front door opened from the impact. The man, described as w/f 52 yrs old, 5-6 and about 200 lbs, was very strong. It was later determined he was a beef lugger at the local processing plant. He became very violent and both deputies attempted to subdue him. Furniture was thrown around inside the living room, and the coffee table was crushed when all three fell on it during the scuffle. The fight moved into the kitchen when the night sticks were introduced and the man was subdued. At that time a 14 year old girl started crying and said to let her Daddy Go or she would call the police. “Call them, Call them right now and tell them where you are and what is going on” ….. and she did, not realizing we were already on the scene. The dispatcher figured out we must need help and issued the “Help an Officer Call”. About 8 cruisers arrived before the rest were ordered to stand down by the sergeant on the scene. Uniforms torn and soiled from egg shells in the garbage can that was thrown, the man was transported to the jail. There was no original probable cause other than a motorist assistance, which lead to a speeding charge, then NO ID, and the fight. Booked for driving without a license and resisting arrest, he made bail later that day.

About a week goes by, and the Investigations Unit gets a call from a 14 year old girl, this guy’s daughter. She said her dad was crazy and had bought a machine gun with a night scope on it … (later determined to be an M16 with Night Vision Scope on it) … and that he was going to kill the deputies who beat him up. Both deputies were summoned into the office and relocated to another district for patrol until the guy could be found. Again the girl called and said her dad had claimed he hired some Hells Angels to kill the cops. A few days later, the man was found dead, shot in the back of the head, M16 missing, his bank account had $10,000 cash withdrawn the day before. Both deputies were questioned as to their where abouts prior to the murder. Both were cleared. Several days later, an informant told the investigators the man had met with the motorcycle gang and things got hostile, and he was executed and robbed.
It was later determined that his car was overheating, and that’s when the deputies had their initial contact. His wallet was in fact inside the house, his drivers license was valid, and he had simply acted irrationally over being approached by the deputies. It appeared his thought processes were not normal, and to hire hit men to kill cops was clearly irrational.

You never know what is going to happen in a traffic stop .. even a motorist assist can be complicated.

ON DEPLOYMENT:  THE HONORARY KNIGHTING OF A SOLDIER:

IT's been said that a successful man is one who offers help or assistance without being asked, and without the expectations of being recognized or rewarded for his/her behavior.  Do you help those in need?  Do you have Character:  Over the next few months, we will discuss what it takes to be a total person with Character, those elements that if found in an individual who displays CHARACTER. This story shows the training involved in Special Forces, mentally and physically.  The "inbred rescuer" trained to bring a equal balance into someone's life who needs help. It also demonstrates the "third person" refered to in self defense situations.  Before acting to assist a total stranger with lethal force, I highly suggest, you know that lethal forces are necessary and appropriate.  Sarg, in this case, was lucky.  His split decision was correct, but what if it had been a father - daughter argument?
"ah just call me sarg, Miss"
Once upon a time .... really really far away, in a "civilized country' while laying low, out of sight, waiting to do some of that Green Beret stuff, this soldier ventured out on the town, in jeans, tennis shots, and long hair, fu-man-chu ... all the proper paperwork proving he was not  US, but a regular european guy.  He had a good dinner and a glass of wine, and then this young man started his 2 mile walk home.  Crossing the streets, dodging the idiots driving on the wrong side of the road,  nearly getting pancaked by a bus on it's way to Frankfurt ... he was in the middle of a street when he heard a woman scream, and saw 3 men grabbing her.  One man slapped her hard. That set the chain of events in motion.  At a full run, a flying body kick into the chest of a very surprised and large man.  He went down and never got up, never.  A spin and thrusting upwards  kick to the throat of #2, he lifted him off his feet and crumpled to the ground, never to get up again.  It seems swimming 8 miles a day, running 3-10 mile a day, hack squating 658 lbs, vertical lifts 500 lbs on a regular basis, and humping a 130 lbs rutsack all over the world just paid off.  Next,  #3 let go of the damsel in distress and pulled a knife, only to have it buckled over into his left shoulder and yanked down severing a tendon or muscle in the left arm ... he left running and bleeding.  The young man turned to the girl, she had weird psycholdelic glasses on, a shaw on her shoulders, and a scarf around her hair and chin.   "Are you alright miss?"  "Thanks to you, my god you are fast and strong. Are they ok?"  The medic checked, no pulses.  "Dead, and I hope they were not friends?" ... "No, they were going to rape me and kill me they said."  He said "Ok, well we better call the police, I can't stay around though, can't tell you why but it wouldn't be good for me to be here." ... to his surprise she said the same thing, so they left and walked for awhile with little talk until they came in front of the Embasy.  "This is where I'm Staying" she said.  He looked at the armed pair of guards who were staring intensly at them.  Then she faced them and removed her scarf and glasses.  Both guards slapped a panic button, drew their rifles and charged yelling "Princess are you ok" ... pointing their rifles at the young man.  He raised his hands, "I'm an American GI, a good guy".   She ordered them to be At Ease, and told them he was her friend, escort, and bodyguard.  She looked at him "American GI?" and She turned and kissed that young man on the cheek.  "Whats your name?" ... "Ah just call me sarg, Miss'.   "Well, sarg" she said, "I must say I owe my life to you.  How can I repay you?".   "um, just stay out of trouble I guess" he said smiling and blushing ...  she went inside.  Days later, his team sergeant and commander pulled him aside ... seems a surveilance camera caught a princess kissing him .... they had the proof and an honorary KnightHood for him.  As it turns out, this young lady was the daughter of a Duke.  She was being groomed as a "princess" and was only 18 at the time of this incident.  She was suppose to be inside, safe & sound, but disguised herself with the cleaning ladies clothes and snuck outside.  Years later, the Princess was killed in an tragic accident ... that young man cried, knowing his first solo rescue, this wonderful woman, was dead.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
STORY OF THE MONTH: Once upon a time in a land far, far, away, a young deputy, 3 days out of training pulled over a vehicle for suspicion of driving under the influence. This driver was observed driving into a ditch to access fuel pumps at a local 24 hour store. After buying $3.00 worth of fuel, the driver left and then stopped at 2 am for a green pedestrian school crossing light, and sat there for 3 minutes before proceeding forward. The deputy activated his overhead lights and tapped the siren. As he exited his Sheriff cruiser he observed a twisting action within the car by the action. The deputy called for a back-up. During the extensive training, it was relayed that a certain violent motorcycle gang had been responsible for the deaths and injuries of several officers by sticking a shotgun out the side of an open car door, or by using their motorcycle handle bars to hold a shotgun shell, a trigger device to shoot it, and the handle bars acted as a barrel. The shotgun blast on the side of the door would ricochet off the door; move about 6-12 inches from the car side, and go vertical striking the officer approaching. This was reviewed numerous times with actual and simulated video to put that vision in the officer’s mind. The Shoot-Don’t Shoot courses had those simulations. Thus was the case with the Pedestrian Light Stop above. He twisted right, grabbed something, twisted left, and opened the car door. The deputy drew his .357 magnum and stepped back behind the trunk of the car as the barrel of a 12 gauge sawed off Ithaca Model 37 shotgun came out of the car. It was later determined that the driver was a major motorcycle gang member, and that the $3.00 spent on gas was his last money, and he said in his final declaration, he intended on robbing the gas station. His driver’s license revealed he was from Los Angeles and the nature of his business here was unknown. This was the beginning of a long battle, described by other officers as the replay of the OK Corral. This story continued over the next two weeks:  Revenge was in the air.

Part Two: Riding in his girlfriends Land Cruiser, the deputy heard a loud roar as several motorcyles raced by. They "circled the wagon" in a rolling roadblock. Their colors were prominatly displayed...with their name.
They slowed forcing the Land Cruiser to stop. They had a mission, and let it be known as they drew their weapons to the couple in the Land Cruiser. The deputy jumped out with his Colt Detective Special (6 shot .38 caliber) in his hand.  He fired two shots killing two bikers less than 5 feet from him (head shot each).  "Run them over and get out of here" he yelled at the un-armed girlfriend.  She did .. punched it forward and hit two bikers near their bikes .. broken hips and legs ...   The off duty deputy ran down the culvert into a dry concrete river bed, with 4 hostile bikers behind him  ... the rest were in pursuit of the Land Cruiser.    Part 3 soon.
Bad Guys:  3  dead   Good guys/gals:  0 hurt/ 0 dead)

Part Three;  The Toyota Landcruiser was at it's top speed but way to slow for the 2 motorcycles.  The girlfriend realized she could not out run those 2 bikers so she suckered them in.  She went to the right side of the road and allowed the bikers to get next to drivers door on the left side.  She waited until one of them took his hand off off the handle bar to reach for his gun.  At that moment a sem-truck 18 wheeler came around the curve and she yanked the steering wheel left into the motorcycles, forcing them into each other and into the path of the on coming 18 wheeler.  Two more bad guys eliminated.  The deputy was running down the
concrete river.  He hid behind a piller, as two more bikers  came around the corner both of them were neutalized, dead on the ground.  Again, he took off running, knowing he was low on ammo, but lost count of shots fired.  He entered an industrial track, looking for an open business ... none on this weekend day.

Bad Guys:  5 dead by .38,  2 dead by truck,

Part Four:
The girlfriend made it to the 38th division headquarters and drove her Toyota into an open bay sheriff garage, she was blowing the horn, yelling and trying to tell the deputies what was going on.
Her boyfriend, who had just shot and killed 4 "angels", still had 2 bullets left, and no reloader .... no pocket ammo.  He tripped and fell over a curb, twisting his ankle.  A bad guy came around the corner and fired several shots at the deputy, missing.  The deputy hid behind the building in a doorway, as #5 came around the corner he was shot in the head.  The deputy, injured, kicked in the office building door.  He located a phone and dialed the 38th Division HQ.  He told them who he was, what was going on "I've only got one shot left, and I don't know how many bikers are still after me" .... just then a biker jumped on the desk the deputy was hiding under ... "Boom" as the .38 round hit the biker in the forehead ............ "I just killed another one, and I"M OUT OF AMMO".  The desk sergeant replied "Sit tight son, I got 75 cruisers coming your way... eta 2 minutes !!!"  They made it in time.

End Result:   Traffic stop death:  .357 magnum = 1 bad guy      death by .38 = 6,  death by semi-truck = 2

The deputy was removed from active road patrol duty for a year, and placed fulltime into SWAT.  After that he
resumed the road patrol duties, and maintained his sniper and entry team SWAT status as needed.

His Girlfriend:   bless her heart, couldn't handle the stress and moved away.

To This day:  every girlfriend the deputy has, must qualify and carry a handgun, with extra ammo.

In the end, the last month as a LEO, he was not happy.  His personal life was a shambles.  Alcohol, stress from girl friends,  and lack of sleep were taking it's toll on him both mentally and physically.  He was becoming, well.. insensitive, synical, rude, and he wanted to change it all.  He had flashbacks from a rough abusive childhood (pre-Mom intervention) ... it took it's toll too.  He enjoys helping people, but hates being used.  He found solitude in helping animals ...they appreciate the helping hand, and often show it with a vocal sound.
Songs Like " I Shot the Sheriff" were very popular, all the hot chicks were hanging out with dirtbag assholes, and it seemed the world was upside down,.  So he bailed out .. launched a new career.  And said goodbye to a decade of LE ... no regrets ............

Part of the Law Enforcement Public Service was to insert a officer into high crime areas as a "resident".  The agency paid the house rent.  It was an interesting experience.
This neighborhood was a high crime area.  A brother lived 3 blocks away doing the same thing.
He'd call and ask "Did you hear that gunfire last night?" ...... he replied:  "It's a war zone out here brother, I hear gunfire every night"!!!
This neighborhood was easy to find at night, 1 or 2 police helicopters would hover over head at night.
